DAY 19: Monday 6 April ALL THINGS WORK FOR GOOD
Good morning to everyone
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28.
Paul’s words in his epistle to the Romans are among the most well-known and most quoted in the Bible:
Let’s read it again: “We know that all things” (both good and bad, pleasant and unpleasant – everything – and that includes every person) “works together for the best for those who love God.” Everything that we meet in life, everything, without exception, works together for our best. It couldn’t be written more clearly, but too often we don’t see it. We, quite simply, don’t read properly and we’re not interested enough either; so we don’t take the time.
But if we believe in this verse, then another verse in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 is also fulfilled: “In everything give thanks …” Note is does not say “In everything that is good give thanks” That’s not what’s written. It says: “In everything give thanks” both the bad and the good. That’s how thankful we should be if we really do believe Romans 8:28.
Today is 6th April the start of the new tax year – do we believe all things will work together for good financially in the next 12 months? On the 6th April 2019, Karen and I were standing on the edge of a steaming volcano on the Caribbean island of St Lucia.
Just a few months earlier we weren’t planning to be there; we should have been spending a week on the Greek island of Kos because Jean Slater had told us what a wonderful place it was and neither of us had ever been to Greece. But something happened with Saga’s online booking site whilst Karen was making the booking for Kos, and to cut a long story short, we ended up for 8 days in the Caribbean instead!
Today, like the rest of you, we are staying in. Our planned big 2020 holiday has been cancelled and we’ve no idea when we will be allowed to even take our caravan off the drive. Chapel meetings have been suspended and we can only contact family and friends over the phone and by email. Many people are living in fear of what will happen in the current crisis and when will things ever return to ‘normal’.
But do we still believe that all things work together for good to those who love God. Yes, we do, and we are looking forward to when the Chapel will once again be packed with rejoicing people and when we might be able to visit the beautiful places in this country.
But in the meantime, we will pray for the thousands affected by the effects of the virus, those unable to go to work, businesses closed, serious financial worries and personal grief. Wherever possible, we will also seek to help and encourage all those affected and to demonstrate the love of Christ to all.
NEWS FOR PRAYER:
Because of a planned increase in Coronavirus end-of-life patients being admitted to John Taylor Hospice, Anne Roberts has to make a difficult professional decision in the next couple of days whether she should stop working there in order to protect herself and vulnerable family members from possible infection
Ted Roberts has been feeling unwell feeling very weary for the past 2 weeks, but I understand is now showing some improvement.
Vivien Kiely is struggling to deal with the ‘stay indoors’ regime
MAKE YOU SMILE:
The preacher was wired for sound with a lapel mike, and as he preached, he moved briskly about the platform, jerking the mike cord as he went.
Then he moved to one side, getting wound up in the cord and nearly tripping over before jerking it again.
After several circles and jerks, a little girl in the third row leaned toward her mother and whispered, "If he gets loose, will he hurt us?"
Finally for today, Marilyn has sent the following –
