DAY 73:  Saturday 30 May

Good morning everyone

Although the doors of churches up and down the land have remained closed for the past 10 weeks, we need to remind ourselves and those around us that THE CHURCH is not confined to a building, it is the people of God. Our normal activities may have been suspended since early March, but we can still be available for one another and others in our community, if not physically, then certainly by phone, email and prayer. God has not forgotten us nor the sometime desperate needs of those around us, and those needs are not just confined to food, money or physical health, there can be very real mental and emotional needs as well.

These daily emails have been my small effort to keep us encouraged with a sense of togetherness and putting together appropriate messages for the past 73 days has not been without challenges. I am very aware that there are a number of members of our church, and others we know who don’t have access to email or internet and consequently have been excluded from all our discussions, Hymnalongs and daily jokes.

A few years ago, Falcon Lodge Chapel was listed by an organisation called ‘Faith in Later Life’ [FILL] as a local church particularly supporting the older generation through, for example, our Coffee Mornings, Holiday at Home and 3GF minibus trip activities. FILL have recently been involved along with the Archbishop of Canterbury and others in setting up a free daily telephone line called DAILY HOPE which seeks to support such isolated people, usually from the older generation, who have no means of communication apart from telephone.

By ringing a freephone number, callers can listen to a message from Archbishop Justin Welby or choose to listen or singalong to a hymn, Thought for the Day and prayers. The hymn, thought for the Day and prayers change each day. Since the service was launched just one month ago, DAILY HOPE has received over 110,000 calls with 1.2 million listening minutes and many people have expressed their thanks and appreciation for this free service, many of those acknowledging no previous religious affiliation.

Please share this with anyone you know who has only their telephone as a means of contact. All calls are FREE from landline or UK mobile numbers.

The number is 0800 804 8044.

Once connected, callers are invited to press star* to hear the welcome message from Justin Welby, or press 1 for the daily hymn and devotional. Most days, calls will last around 18-20 minutes or for as long as the caller wants to listen.

I trust the above will help to draw others, previously excluded, into our circle because as the rainbow poster states –

We are CHURCH and we are here FOR YOU

1 Corinthians 12:12 - A person has only one body, but it has many parts. Yes, there are many parts, but all those parts are still just one body. Christ is like that too.

Isaiah 40:31 - But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Suggested Hymnalong for today is our most popular song at the Chapel over the past decade >>>

MAKE YOU SMILE: - more signs of getting old -

•          You wake up with that ‘morning-after’ feeling but can’t remember doing anything the night before.

•          Your idea of a night out is sitting on the patio.

•          Your idea of weightlifting is standing up.

•          Your joints are more accurate at forecasting than the Met Office.

•          Your memory is shorter but your complaining is longer.
