DAY 87:  Saturday 13 June

Good morning all

The topic of the past 24 hours seems to have shifted to face coverings reminding everyone that from this Monday we will all be expected to use a face covering if we travel on public transport, if we for any reason visit a hospital or surgery and in some retail environments.

A face covering is intended to reduce the risk of becoming infected by someone else and equally preventing you from unknowingly transmitting the infection to someone else – very good objectives. So the covering is designed to prevent something harmful from damaging us. We still need to wash our hands frequently so the combination of face coverings, social distancing and washing hands will continue to reduce the daily infection numbers.

I am reminded of the passage in the New Testament where James writes - James 3:6 The tongue is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

So if we could filter what comes out of our mouths, that would be good and prevent damage to both our own and others’ lives. The face covering is a picture of us not spreading the infections of gossip, lies, slander, heresy, cursing or blasphemy and filth. James continues in his letter to remind us that whilst mankind can tame animals and some elements of nature, untamed tongues are fires setting the world ablaze with incitement, rebellion and evil. The face covering is also a protection from inhaling poisonous words and ideas from others, or becoming contaminated with hatred, pride and prejudice.

Just as the Covid virus is invisible to the naked eye and ruthless in who it attacks, so we need to be constantly on our guard and alert to the testing and temptation that assails us.

1 Peter 5:8 - Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

So as you put on your face masks next week, remember it is both to protect you and protect others. In the same way, the love of God dwelling within us protects us

1 Corinthians 13:6-7 - Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

When you think ‘I can’t do that’ or ‘I don’t think I good enough’, then there’s help at hand. The child of God is never alone; the power, protection, love and strength of God is always available if we are prepared to recognise and accept his gracious gift. In those times and situations when we are tempted to think that God is not there and we’re on our own, stop staring at the ground, turn around and rediscover He’s there with us. We can’t manage the complexities of this life alone – we need support and help – from our friends, from close family and loved ones, and most of all from God.

Here's a Hymnalong to reinforce those thoughts >>> HE WILL HOLD ME FAST
